CGI is computer generated imagery which is special visual effects using computer software. There are multiple different types of CGI. These different kinds of CGI have different uses and the different types are:
Static: Static CGI is a still or unanimated picture. Its a single fixed image unlike dynamic CGI where there are multiple pictures put together to animate the scene.
This picture is a good example of static CGI and shows the action that could be going on in a scene with a single still picture. This gives you an idea of what is going on and what the characters are feeling in the scene. Static CGI makes the scene easier to understand and to analyze compared to dynamic but doesn't give a lot of context to the scene and characters.
Dynamic: Dynamic CGI is generated in real time and constantly moving in some way. It is created off data and algorithms allowing for more changing visuals compared to static where it is very still this gives you much more information to observe but can be harder to analyze then a still image.
This video is a very good way to explain how CGI works as well as what dynamic CGI is this video shows the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie and shows how they used CGI with many different aspects to help create the illusion like that is what actually happening.
2D: 2D CGI is very self explanatory it is an image made in a 2nd dimensional space. These images only have height and width compared to 3D which adds depth to the scene. 2D's lack of depth makes it feel less impactful compared to 3D images that have been made similar to them.
The 2D image I picked is a good example of how the 2D CGI may like certain factors compared to that of 3D. This image shows that 2D images normally have less impact compared to that of 3D images which have a lot of depth and emotion which can help better understand what is going on in the scene.
3D: This is CGI in the 3rd dimension. Unlike 2D which is only length and width this CGI adds an extra factor which is depth. This can help make or break a scene. The depth in things like film are necessary to having a successful movie because of how it can impact the audience.
This video from the new Avatar Way of Water is a very good example of 3D animation this example shows how the 3D animation can make the movie have more feeling and overall helping the movie become more popular.
Subtle: Subtle CGI is CGI that is used but doesn't make it completely obvious. This is used when they wanna make a scene still look real but enhance it in some way
This image from iron man shows a good example of subtle CGI because they use it to make it seem like Iron Man has a couple scratches and scrapes so it made it seem more realistic.
Obvious: Obvious CGI is very visible to the viewer and they can easily tell that they used CGI in the scene. The use of obvious CGI can be in things like superhero movies showing off their powers or other movies like action movies
This example shows Flash using his powers with electricity around him showing the obvious amount of CGI that is used to help show off his abilities in the scene.
