 There are many different genres in movies. These genres all have different meanings and jobs they're supposed to accomplish. I'm gonna go over a couple of the different kinds of genre in films and list some of the common conventions


Some common movie genres are:


Horror: A horror is a peace of media that is used to shock, scare, or disgust the people consuming the peace of media.

Common conventions:

Dark lighting

Ominous settings

Normally some kind of evil or villainous characters

The theme is centered around fear and the unknown

Ominous music

Jump scares

One example of a horror movie is Smile 2. This horror movie uses many of these different conventions to make the movie more scary and ominous. The movie uses many jump scares and is why I used the clip of the movie right under this.



Action: A type of media that is commonly fast paced and meant to keep the watcher on the edge of there seat an keeping them hooked the entire time throughout the movie

Hero and villain

A central conflict

Fast paced

Common themes

Special powers

One example of a recent action movie is Deadpool and Wolverine. This movie uses many of the conventions used in action movies. There are heroes and villains in this movie as well as a central conflict that is seen throughout the movie as well as many other common conventions and is why I picked this movie.



Comedy: Comedy is a specific genre of media that can usually be used with other kinds of genres as well. Comedies are movies that use humor in some kind of way to entertain and make people laugh

funny quips

idiotic character types

brighter more happy lighting

emphasis on dialogue and sound effects

One good example of a comedy is Happy Gilmore which uses many of the common conventions that i listed as well as some others it uses funny sound effects in some spots as well as funny quips that they use to make people laugh. This is why i picked this movie as a good example of comedy films.



Drama: A drama is a story or other piece of media with high stakes and many conflicts. Dramas are very commonly also action movies and have many of the same characteristics.

Characters thoughts being out loud


The fall guy is a good example a drama because of the many different shifting viewpoints and many conflicts throughout it. It also follows many of the other conventions follow and is why i picked it.



Romance: Romances are pieces of media that are meant to get people in more of a lovey mood and also keep people in the 2 main characters who are in love with each other

Close ups

Over the shoulder shots


The movie Greese has 2 main characters but also has many different love interest and follows many of the common conventions of a romance movie and is why i picked this movie
